Opening Your Eye To Unexpected Surprises
Clear Vision Ahead
As I was hiking along a dusty trail at sunset in the foothills of Ojai California, I found hidden behind some bushes on a rock, these lonely spectacles. Lost, abandon, forgotten….who knows? Here they sat easily upon the rock, they peered out to the valley below. Until that moment I had focused all of my energy on getting to a particular and familiar spot to watch the ebbing sun fall from the sky and grace me with the glowing embers of it’s fading light. However, as I gave more attention to the forgotten specs, and I peered out through the dirty glass, I realized that this spot was where I needed to be. I sat down along the valley ridge line gazing out to the valley below waiting for the final light show of the day.
It did not take long before I was capturing the image above with the background out of focus, and the spectacles showing all their dust and grunginess, I could clearly imagine the person who wore them. I could see them removing them, setting them on the rock, and looking out into the valley, seeing the sunset as I photographed it…… A little blurry, the mountains out of focus, and yet still colorful, bold, vibrant and beautiful.
I sat for a while, finally putting the camera away. I fully enjoyed the view before heading down the mountain trail, as the darkness fell heavier around me. I thought of Marcel Proust’s quote…that seemed so fitting of the moment.
The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes, but in having new eyes.” — Marcel Proust
Perchance someone else might happen upon the hidden and oddly placed spectacles, or perhaps they will sit upon the rock just as I left them. Alone, peering out into the distant valley enjoying the view.
